Scientist successfully recovered stroke damage of stroke-inflicted rodent
On April 9, 2020, multiple news sources published articlse on research from Lund University in Sweden that declared scientists reversed post-stroke damage in rodent nerve cells. Research was done by reprogramming human skin cells to act as nerve cells. When these cells were transplanted in the rats brain, the mobility and sensation was repaired.
“We want to know more about how the transplanted cells affect the opposite hemisphere of the brain. We also want to take a closer look at how a transplant affects intellectual functions such as memory. In addition, we will study possible side effects. Safety is, of course, extremely important for cell transplantation if it is going to be used clinically in the future," says Zaal Kokaia, co-author of the study.
This study is one step closer to fully repairing the damage caused by strokes in human patients.
